This map shows the rohe (tribal districts) of iwi (Māori tribes) recognised by the Crown in Schedule 3 of the Māori Fisheries Act 2004. This Act identified a finite list of iwi for the purposes of allocation of fisheries assets; the list is comprehensive and means that all persons of Māori descent should be able to affiliate by whakapapa to at least one iwi.
Whereas most of the iwi with bigger rohe can be shown directly on the map there are many iwi that have multiple rohe overlaps with other
iwi so that it is impossible to show their rohe on a map of this size. Consequently, they are listed in the five iwi groups:
Hauraki Iwi,
Tauranga Moana Iwi,
Te Arawa Iwi,
Mātaatua Iwi,
Te Tau Ihu Iwi.
However, the individual rohe of each of these iwi can be seen on their own
pages on Te Kāhui Māngai.
It should be noted that there are a number of iwi/hapū recognised by the Crown for Treaty of Waitangi settlements that are not in the Māori Fisheries Act 2004 and are not shown on this map. In quite a few cases these iwi/hapū are also commonly recognised parts of iwi recognised in the Māori Fisheries Act, for example Heretaunga Tamatea are a mutually recognised grouping of Ngāti Kahungunu hapū.
